A Mercy Analysis

Paragraph 1:

Imagery:
"Stupid Sorrow gaping with pleasure..."

  • I could picture Sorrow mesmerized over the grand house Jacob was constructing and the happiness she experienced by being able to move into this massive house.
"...Mistress couldn't keep a smile off her face. Like everyone else, Willard, Scully, hired help, deliverymen, she was happy..."
  • I could picture the glee Rebekka was feeling by the grand house her husband was builing. that sense of accomplishment and pride to be able to live in such a large house was evident by the smile on her face.
Literary Devices:
"...cooking as though it were harvest time."
  • Mistress was overly excited by her husband's new construction, that she was cooking meals as though they had a plentiful harvest. She is going all out on the meals and not missing out on any minor details. She was putting all her excitement into her meals by making rich food so show that was happy.
"Florens mindless as fern in mind."
  • Florens was not herself, her mind was elsewhere. She didn't really acknowledge what was going on because she was lost in her own thoughts.
Values:
"...especially successful business arrangement he bragged about."
  • This shows that during that time period, money was really important to people and they cherished every penny they made. To them money was everything and making profit was their only goal.
Characterization:
"Stupid Sorrow gaping with pleasure..."
  • This shows that Sorrow is not considered to be one of the more intelligent slaves. She is more childish and not as experienced as the others.
"...replace them with a profane monument to himself.."
  • This showed the Jacob Vaark was conceited and cared about how others looked upon him. He wanted to have a monument to himself to show that was wealthy and worthy just like the other gentry. He wanted to show off just like D'Ortega.
Language/ Word Choice:
"birth of his doomed sons.."
  • This shows that something ominous was destined for his future generation. It foreshadowed that his sons were born filled with bad luck.
"kill the trees...cheerful every waking moment."
  • This word choice displayed that Jacob considered himself more significant than nature and life because the trees provided life to him and his family, yet he found joy in cutting down those same exact trees. Also, although he was not in favor or cruelty, he was doing displaying it on the trees. This showed how his personality changed with in a span of few years.
Paragraph 2:

Imagery:
"It was their destiny to chew up world and spit out a horribleness that would destroy all primary people"
  • Based on this description, I visualized a scene of angry natives coming to a piece of land and completely ruining it. They were thrashing the property and made it impossible for important people to live.
Literary Devices:
"They would come in languages that sounded like dog bark..."
  • This showed how the Europeans considered the natives to be some sort of strange animals. They looked upon the natives with scorn and didn't consider them to be equal. Also, this shows how when the people spoke in their own native language (completely foreign to the Europeans) they sounded like animals trying to communicate.
Values:
"They would forever fence land, ship whole tree to faraway countries, take any woman for quick pleasure, ruin soil, befoul sacred places..."
  • This showed that the intruders (the Europeans) did not care about the people who were already living on the land that were invading. They destroyed the inhabitants home and land because they weren't considered as anything. The Europeans considered themselves to be more important, thus they could do as they please.

Characterization:
"...she did not trust their instincts."
  • Although Lina trusted Jacob's and Mistress's judgement, she did not trust their instincts. This showed that they were good at making decisions but when it came time to acting upon your own gut or on the spur of the moment, they weren't able to make the best decision. Also, this showed they were not good at making decisions where you had to use your own views, for example they kept Sorrow close but according to Lina it was a mistake to do so.
Language/Word Choice:
"...childish hunger for animal fur."
  • Using the words childish hunger to describe the natives need for animal fur showed that the Europeans considered them to be children begging after one thing. They seemed greedy for this animal fur and were willing to obtain it at all costs.
